Dance Belts
Fatou Mata

Mama Fatou Mata, a practicing artist, was taught this and many crafts by Pap Abdoulaye Camara (1985-2005). Come join us in a delightful presentation illustrating the process and material for making African dance belts. Globally, dancers have used these belts (specifically North and West African) as an accent and adornment. Cowry shells, beads, and bells and a rhythmic treat as well. Belly dancers, West African dancers, and art lovers will benefit greatly from this event!

Fanta Drummer

Fanta Drummer, an entrepreneur of eclectic graphic images will give an inside look into how pieces are created. She will share a few techniques with us on creating one-of-a-kind greeting and Kwanzaa cards—one that you can send as a card and a keepsake.

Praise Dance of Oshun

Experience a slice of African-Cuban tradition that has been kept alive in spite of the slave trade. Learn about one of the many praise dances and songs to Nigerian Orisa, Michael Nelson and Bata Inlel will accompany Kimberly in the illustration of the dance of the Oshun (the energy of the river).

Family Art Activities and Performances

Help us celebrate the African Arts Festival with the dancers and musicians of Fundisha Enterprises. After you’re finished dancing, join us to make a sculpture inspired by and African myth. This activity is part of the Museum’s weekly Family Sunday Program. Families are invited to the Museum every Sunday afternoon for free hands-on art activities. Sculpture Hall. Free.

Join us for guided, family-friendly tours of the African Art galleries. Meet at the Information Desk. Free.

Saint Louis Zoo

Visitors can participate in educational activities that will highlight the Zoo’s conservation work in Africa. Through the WildCare Institute, the Saint Louis Zoo is creating a sustainable future for wildlife and for people in Africa, and around the world. Educational activities will focus on Equids and Addax. Pick up your activity guide at the welcome desk at either entrance to the Zoo.
